01. Overview

Revieve helped Shiseido Japan develop the Skin Visualizer, Shiseido’s first touchless, over-the-counter smart-mirror device that measures and visualizes, in real-time, the elements of beauty circulation in the skin.

 

The Skin Visualizer calculates the skin’s condition for anyone, regardless of gender, skin color, skin type, or makeup, and then recommends products based on the measurements, the skin condition, and the customer’s skin concerns, always assisted by a SHISEIDO beauty professional.

 

As part of the Revieve design team, collaborating closely with the product and development teams and SHISEIDO, we worked together to craft the UX and UI that resulted in the final solution.

03. Objectives

1. Integrate the Revieve plugin into the Shiseido experience.

2. Create a touchless user experience that is easily navigated with guidance from Shiseido store personnel.

3. Design the UI to account for mirror lighting and contrast, ensuring clear visibility and readability.

4. Gather real-time and asynchronous feedback with the Shiseido team to  make necessary adjustments throughout the project.

5. Ensure the project’s success by maintaining constant communication with developers to address any technical issues.

6. Incorporate the Shiseido ultimate triangle  into the user results to clearly visualize key skin metrics.

7. Adhere to Shiseido’s brand guidelines to ensure all design elements align with the company’s visual guidelines.

04. Design

With the project already agreed with revieve. We had a  meeting with Shiseido design team to generate a detailed brief with all specs and requirements.

04.1. Skin Analysis

The Revieve plugin analyzes the user’s skin condition using data from a simple, customizable survey, combined with a real-time visual analysis from a photo or video. The AI processes this information, generating numerical results for each parameter, which are then matched with the client’s products that can improve these conditions.

 

The Skin Visualizer will calculate the skin’s condition as it measures beauty circulation inside the skin and on its surface. The process should be effective for anyone, regardless of gender, skin color or skin type. With no need for removing makeup and with no actual physical contact, will measures skin’s radiance, smoothness, and resilience. Based on the measurements, the skin condition, and the customer’s skin concerns. 

 

Customers will receive highly individualized information on how they personally can achieve their healthy vibrant skin with recommended shiseido products.

04.2.Research

A survey conducted by SHISEIDO in 2019 revealed that people around the world describe ideal skin as “healthy vibrant skin* .” The Skin Visualizer measures the skin conditions that contribute to this ideal and indicates the level of each condition as part of a total Ultimate Triangle Score. The balance of the three major indicators (radiance, resilience and suppleness, and fine skin texture and smoothness of the skin) is presented in the form of a triangular graph.

04.3. User

There where two main users involved:

1. A Shiseido beauty professional that recommends products. 

2. The Shiseido customer: anyone, regardless of gender, skin color or skin type. With no need for removing makeup and with no actual physical contact with the mirror.

User details and data are protected by the NDA.

Shiseido Store: 

A counter inside the Shiseido store, optimal ilumination with a special zone for the mirror,a seat for the customer and skincare product samples around.

04.4. Flow & Prototype

With the user flow defined, and wireframes ready, the prototype was the next step with 5 itterations/versions tested and evolved in the stores.

05. Challenges

  • Integrating the ultimate triangle: a cutting-edge triangular graph that visualizes the balance of radiance, resilience, suppleness, fine skin texture, and smoothness.
  • Coordinating constant meetings, reviews, and changes with multiple stakeholders from different teams, and ensuring all inputs were cohesively integrated.
  • Addressing issues with reflections and background lighting to enhance the mirror’s readability.
  • Managing delays caused by the frequent reviews and approvals required from various teams in both companies.

  • The final UX and UI design balanced sophistication and simplicity. We ensured that the data visualization was clear and informative, and that the interface was aesthetically aligned with Shiseido’s branding while remaining highly functional and user-centric.
